A prospective evaluation of postoperative opioid use in otologic surgery
Otology & Neurotology Sep 19, 2019
Qian ZJ, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers prospectively assessed opioid consumption following adult outpatient otologic surgery. Between February 2018 and February 2019, patients scheduled for otologic surgery who had no history of chronic opioid use were recruited. Using telephone or in-person surveys administered between postoperative days 5 and 15, opioid consumption was queried. According to results, 70 patients received an average of 68.9 ± 31.8 mg of morphine equivalents (MME) and a postoperative intake of 47.3 ± 42.9 MME over 2.4 ± 2.3 days. In the cohort, patients consumed about 3/4 of the prescribed opioids. Postauricular incision users used significantly more than transcanal incision users. Recommendations for postoperative opioid prescription should be tailored to the extent of the operation.
