A prospective comparative study between prewarming and cowarming to prevent intraoperative hypothermia
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Jul 02, 2019
Shenoy L, et al. - Researchers compared cowarming (initiation of convective warming simultaneously with induction of anesthesia) vs prewarming (initiation of convective warming of the patient at a time point before induction of anesthesia) as a preventive strategy against the development of intraoperative hypothermia. Participants were adult patients (n=62) undergoing major abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. In a randomized manner, either prewarming for 60 min at 40° C or cowarming using the Level 1 Equator body warmer was received by the participants. During anesthesia induction, cowarming was also received by all patients who were prewarmed. During intraoperative period, continuation of convective warming was ensured in both the groups. Findings revealed that the efficacy of cowarming was equivalent to that of prewarming when used to prevent intraoperative hypothermia.
