A prospective cohort study of a same-day discharge percutaneous endovascular aneurysm repair pathway

Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 26, 2018

Sabalbal M, et al. - Since the safety of a same-day discharge pathway after percutaneous endovascular aneurysm repair (PEVAR) was suggested by a retrospective study, researchers assessed the postoperative course and short-term follow-up of patients who qualified for a same-day discharge pathway designed to discharge select patients undergoing PEVAR within 24 hours of surgery. In this prospective cohort study, longer postoperative lengths of stay had no associations with type of anesthesia, age of the patient, aneurysm size, preoperative glomerular filtration rate, intraoperative endoleak, and history of cardiac disease, diabetes, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. No complications were reported at the 48-hour follow-up visit. Overall, outpatient aortic surgery can be safely performed in carefully selected patients.
