A prospective clinical cohort study of women at increased risk for endometrial cancer
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 26, 2019
Clarke MA, Long BJ, Sherman ME, et al. - Researchers performed this large, prospective cohort study to assess endometrial cancer (EC) risk evaluation and early detection strategies in high-risk populations. They describe the baseline findings of this study done on women undergoing an endometrial assessment to analyze risk factors and obtain new biospecimens for future examination of emerging EC biomarkers. Enrollment of women aged ≥ 45 years was done at the Mayo Clinic from February 2013–June 2018. Age, body mass index, smoking, oral contraceptive and hormone therapy use, and parity were included as risk factors. The study sample comprised 1,205 women with a mean age of 55 years. The prevalence of EC was estimated to be 4.1% (n = 49), mainly diagnosed in postmenopausal women (85.7%). From 99% of women, tampons were obtained and Tao brushings were collected from 68% of women. There was no link of parity and prior oral contraception use with EC. Overall, experts concluded the possible less discriminatory accuracy of well-established EC risk factors in high-risk populations.
