A prospective case-control study comparing optical coherence tomography characteristics in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder- optic neuritis and idiopathic optic neuritis
BMC Ophthalmology Sep 20, 2018
Zhao X, et al. - Researchers sought to study the optical coherence tomography (OCT) characteristics between neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder-optic neuritis (NMOSD-ON) and idiopathic optic neuritis (IDON) in Asians via performing a prospective case-control study involving 152 eyes from 143 optic neuritis (ON) patients. Based on the AQP4-Ab test, they divided all the patients into either the NMOSD-ON group or the IDON group. Compared to the IDON group, the NMOSD-ON group displayed more pronounced retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) thinning and visual function impairment. NMOSD-ON had a higher prevalence of microcystic macular edema, that was associated with a higher frequency of clinical relapses.
