A practical approach to avoiding cardiovascular adverse effects of psychoactive medications
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Sep 18, 2017
Brouillette J, et al. - This trial weighed the potential adverse cardiovascular consequences of psychoactive medications. Suggestions were presented here for practical approaches to avoiding them. Emphasis ought to be laid on the risk factors of drug-specific cardiac adverse effect, appropriate patient-related drug selection and follow-up. This would aid in identifying the adverse reactions early and adjusting it accordingly. Therapy initiation was recommended with low doses, followed by cautious dose-titration and adjustment of drug regimen based on clinical responses. The negative consequences on cardiovascular/metabolic risk-profile presenting with very detrimental long-term effects on cardiovascular health had to be minimized with extra caution. It was significant to take care that fear of cardiovascular adverse effects did not deprive patients of appropriate psychoactive drug-therapy.
