A positive cocaine urine toxicology test and the effect on intraoperative hemodynamics under general anesthesia
Anesthesia & Analgesia Jan 22, 2021
Moon TS, Pak TJ, Kim A, et al. - Although cocaine has a short biological half-life, there may be identification of inactive urine metabolites for a week following use. Researchers here examined if a greater percentage of hemodynamic events occur intraoperatively among patients who test positive for cocaine but have a normal electrocardiogram and vital signs. They enrolled a total of 328 patients with a history of cocaine use who were scheduled for elective noncardiac surgery under general anesthesia. Outcomes revealed similar percentages of intraoperative hemodynamic events among asymptomatic cocaine-positive patients undergoing elective noncardiac surgery under general anesthesia vs cocaine-negative patients.
