A population-based comparison of joint survival of hemiarthroplasty vs total shoulder arthroplasty in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 04, 2019
Lapner PLC, et al. - In this observational study, researchers assessed survivorship of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) vs hemiarthroplasty (HA) while controlling for important covariables and accounting for death as a competing risk. Using population-based health administrative data, they identified 5777 patients who underwent shoulder arthroplasty (4079 TSA, 70.6%; 1698 HA, 29.4%). Among these, revision was required in 321 (5.6%), and death was reported for 1090 (18.9%). Findings revealed that patients undergoing HA had a trend towards higher revision risk. However, survivorship between patients undergoing TSA or HA was not statistically significantly different.
