A point-based histologic scoring system for hepatocellular carcinoma can stratify risk of posttransplant tumor recurrence
American Journal of Surgical Pathology Jun 20, 2018
Roberts DE, et al. - A retrospective analysis of 190 explanted livers containing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was performed and the correlation of histologic features with posttransplant recurrence was determined to formulate a three-tiered, point-based scoring system [Recurrence Risk Assessment Score (RRAS)] that categorizes tumors as having a low, intermediate, or high risk of recurrence. Results indicated the superiority of evaluation of tumor histology in predicting the recurrence risk following liver transplantation compared with radiographic criteria. Compared with HCC grading by WHO methodology, the RRAS system better stratified recurrence risk.
