A pilot study to profile salivary angiogenic factors to detect head and neck cancers
BMC Cancer Jul 23, 2018
van der Merwe L, et al. - Given angiogenesis represents a hallmark of tumor initiation and progression, researchers used the Bio-Plex Pro assays to assess a panel of angiogenic factors in saliva samples collected from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients and controls. They found that in the saliva samples collected from HNSCC patients vs control cohort, a panel of five angiogenic proteins (soluble epidermal growth factor receptor, human growth factor, soluble human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, soluble interleukin 6 receptor antagonist, and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule) was different. Findings suggested the utility of angiogenic factor levels in saliva as a potential diagnostic biomarker panel in HNSCC.
