A pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of motivational interviewing on initiating behavioral therapy for migraine
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Feb 02, 2020
Minen MT, Sahyoun G, Gopal A, et al. - Given the value of motivational interviewing (MI) for helping patients to explore and overcome ambivalence to enact positive life changes, researchers here examined whether telephone-based MI could improve initiation, scheduling, and attending behavioral therapy for migraine. In this single-blind randomized controlled trial, telephone-based MI is compared with treatment as usual (TAU) among 76 participants (MI = 36, TAU = 40) who were recruited during their appointments with headache specialists at two sites of a New York City medical center. Outcomes suggest brief telephone-based MI as valuable for improving rates of initiation of behavioral therapy for migraine, however, there are other barriers that seem to reduce the impact on scheduling and attending behavioral therapy appointments. Behavioral therapy initiation was stated to hampered in correlation to the following reasons: lack of time, lack of insurance/funding, prioritizing other treatments, and travel plans.
