A peripheral blood DNA methylation signature of hepatic fat reveals a potential causal pathway for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Diabetes Apr 05, 2019
Ma J, et al. - Via conducting epigenome-wide association studies of hepatic fat (measured using computed tomography or ultrasound imaging) in 3,400 European ancestry (EA) participants and in 401 Hispanic ancestry and 724 African ancestry participants from four population-based cohort studies, researchers identified the peripheral blood DNA methylation [assessed at over 400,000 cytosine-guanine dinucleotides (CpGs) in whole blood or CD14+ monocytes using a commercial array] signature of hepatic fat. The data presented in this work showed a peripheral blood-derived DNA methylation signature was robustly related to hepatic fat accumulation. The CpGs linked to hepatic fat could be attractive biomarkers for type 2 diabetes.
