A novel factor influencing perioperative midazolam administration: The effect of presentation dose on administration dose
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Jul 02, 2019
Ershoff BD, et al. - In this retrospective, observational study, researchers investigated if the dose in which midazolam was dispensed to anesthesiologists was related to the quantity of midazolam given perioperatively. At a single site, tertiary care, university hospital, adult patients (n=310) who underwent general anesthesia prior to and following a change in midazolam presentation from 2 mg to 3 mg, were analyzed. In the 3 mg presentation cohort vs 2 mg presentation cohort, 2.67 mg vs 1.99 mg were the respective mean dose of midazolam administered. Findings revealed 22 times greater odds of receiving a dose of 3 mg or greater in the 3 mg presentation cohort as compared to the odds of receiving such a dose in the 2 mg presentation cohort, as per a logistic regression model. In patients ≥ 65 years of age, no such impact of presentation dose on administration dose was evident. Overall, the impact of midazolam presentation dose on the administration dose was shown in this study.
