A novel biomarker to screen for malnutrition: Albumin/fibrinogen ratio predicts septic failure and acute infection in patients who underwent revision total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty May 03, 2021
Maimaiti Z, Xu C, Fu J, et al. - In this study, the effectiveness of the albumin/fibrinogen ratio (AFR) in the assessment of malnutrition and to compare its ability to predict early postoperative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in patients with aseptic revisions was explored. Between February 2017 and December 2019, researchers conducted a retrospective study including a total of 466 patients undergoing revision total hip or knee arthroplasty. The differences in nutritional parameters between patients undergoing revision for septic and aseptic reasons were compared. Via receiver operating characteristic curves, the predictive ability of nutritional markers was evaluated. The data revealed that AFR may be an effective biomarker to evaluate nutrition status and predict acute PJIs following revision of total joint arthroplasty.
