A new adhesive bone conduction hearing system effectively treats conductive hearing loss in children

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Apr 08, 2019

Neumann K, et al. - In a short- and mid-term follow-up in children under 10 years of age, researchers estimated the audiological and clinical consequence of non-surgical hearing system (ADHEAR) vs conventional bone conduction hearing devices integrated in softbands (BCDSs). They observed that the functional gain with the ADHEAR averaged over 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz surpassed that of the conventional BCDS (35.6 dB ± 15.1 vs 29.9 dB ± 14.6). They noticed similar improvement in speech perception in quiet as well as noise in the aided situation for both hearing devices. The ADHEAR system was estimated as useful by the parents of 8 of 10 children. They occasionally observed minor wearing problems. They also found that 8 children continued using the ADHEAR following the study. An active middle ear implant was received by one candidate whereas one continued to use a BCDS.
