A network meta‐analysis on the efficacy and safety of monotherapies for tinea capitis, and an assessment of evidence quality
Pediatric Dermatology Sep 12, 2020
Gupta AK, Bamimore MA, Renaud HJ, et al. - Researchers investigated the relative efficacy (mycologic and complete cure rates) of monotherapies for the treatment of tinea capitis via performing a network meta‐analysis. Searching Scopus, PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE (Ovid), and CINAHL, they identified 12 studies meeting the eligibility criteria for the main network. The five systemic monotherapies involved were griseofulvin, ketoconazole, terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole. In tinea capitis cases with the Microsporum genus as the causative species, griseofulvin was reported as the most efficacious with respect to mycological cure and complete cure. In tinea capitis cases with Trichophyton species as causative species, terbinafine was reported as the most efficacious in terms of both mycological and complete cure. The interventions did not differ significantly in terms of risk of adverse events. These results are in line with those of prior pairwise meta‐analyses; the findings corroborated clinical experience and anecdotal evidence in addition.
