A nationwide survey on neonatal medical resources in mainland China: Current status and future challenges
BMC Pediatrics Nov 19, 2019
Li Q, Han T, Zhang Y, et al. - Researchers, for the first time, conducted this nationwide survey to evaluate resources available for the care of sick newborns in mainland China. This survey was carried out by the Chinese Neonatologist Association (CNA), and approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the PLA Army General Hospital (Beijing, China). The outcome of this survey involving a total of 117 questionnaires displayed that investigated neonatal departments (ND) had a mean of 65 beds, including 19.59 neonatal intensive care unit beds. It was noted that the overall ratio doctor/bed and nurse/bed was 1:3.84 and 1:1.43. NDs are not well distributed in mainland China and still face many issues like staff shortage, inadequate facilities, and poor transport. In order to enhance the utilization rate of medical resources and boost the prognosis of critically ill infants, it is imperative to create a neonatal care classification.
