A nationwide population‐based survey on the prevalence and risk factors of symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse in adult women in China – A pelvic organ prolapse quantification system‐based study
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Mar 02, 2021
Pang H, Zhang L, Han S, et al. - Researchers conducted a nationwide cross‐sectional study in six geographic regions of mainland China with the aim to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and burden of symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in adult Chinese women. Among a total of 55,477 included women (response rate, 92.5%; mean age, 45.1 years old), symptomatic POP was prevalent in 9.6%, and its prevalence increased with age in each stage. Relative to other surveys, this work suggested a lower prevalence of symptomatic POP. Anterior compartment prolapse was identified to be the main type of symptomatic POP, indicating that it should be considered first. The odds of each type of symptomatic POP increased in correlation with older age and multiple vaginal deliveries.
