A Nationwide Cohort Study on the risk of non-gynecological cancers in women with surgically verified endometriosis
International Journal of Cancer Nov 19, 2018
Saavalainen L, et al. - Researchers sought how surgically verified endometriosis is associated with non-gynecological cancer risk according to the type of endometriosis (ie, ovarian, peritoneal and deep infiltrating endometriosis). Using the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register 1987–2012, they identified a cohort of 49,933 women with surgically verified endometriosis. For this work, they separately analyzed the sub-cohorts of ovarian (n = 23,210), peritoneal (n = 20,187), and deep infiltrating (n = 2,372) endometriosis. Findings suggest that the risk of only a few non-gynecological cancers was altered among women with surgically verified endometriosis. They identified an increased risk of thyroid cancer in association with endometriosis in the entire cohort and in the sub-cohorts of ovarian and peritoneal endometriosis. A decreased risk of mouth and pharynx cancer, and of pancreatic cancer was evident. The entire cohort and the sub-cohorts of ovarian and peritoneal endometriosis showed an elevated incidence of basal cell carcinoma.
