A nationwide case-cohort study
American Journal of Epidemiology Jan 30, 2020
Metsälä J, Lundqvist A, Virta LJ, et al. - Researchers conducted a nationwide, register-based case-cohort study investigating the correlation of the use of antiasthmatic drugs with the development of type 1 diabetes in childhood. All children who were born between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2008, in Finland and were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes by 2010 (n = 3,342) were assessed as cases. From each birth year, they selected 10% random sample cohort as a reference cohort (n = 80,909). The analysis revealed a correlation of dispensed inhaled corticosteroids and inhaled β-agonists with an augmented risk of type 1 diabetes after adjusting for other antiasthmatic drugs, asthma, gender, and birth decade. Findings thereby imply a raised risk of type 1 diabetes among children using inhaled corticosteroids or inhaled β-agonists.
