A multiyear cross-sectional study of U.S. national prescribing patterns of first-generation sedating antihistamines in older adults with skin disease
British Journal of Dermatology Jul 26, 2019
Cenzer I, et al. - Using data from the U.S. National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (2006–2015), researchers conducted this multiyear cross-sectional observational study to investigate first-generation antihistamine (FGA) prescription rates for older patients visiting dermatology offices and compare them with those for younger patients (aged 18 to 65 years) visiting dermatology offices and older patients visiting primary care physicians (PCPs). The overall FGA prescription rate for older patients was similar for dermatology visits to that for younger patients, even if the diagnosis was dermatitis or pruritus or itch was a complaint. However, in analyses matched for patient and visit characteristics, the rate of FGA prescription for visits to dermatology was smaller than that for visits to PCP. For older patients, FGAs are overprescribed, but dermatologists are less likely to prescribe FGAs than PCPs.
