A multicenter study of irrigation and debridement in total knee arthroplasty periprosthetic joint infection: Treatment failure is high
Journal of Arthroplasty Nov 29, 2017
Urish KL, et al. - Irrigation and debridement (I&D) failure rates, surgical outcomes, and predictors of failure in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) were assessed in a large, multicenter cohort with extended follow-up. Findings demonstrated that I&D with retention of components had a high failure rate. After the selection of this option, a high incidence of more complex procedures was reported. I&D success was not predicted by the identified patient comorbidities. Overall, it was concluded that I&D has a limited ability to control infection in TKA and should be used selectively under optimum conditions.
