A multi-center case series of sarcoid optic neuropathy
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Dec 23, 2020
Webb LM, Chen JJ, Aksamit AJ, et al. - Researchers conducted a multi-center retrospective study to analyze the characteristics and outcomes of sarcoid optic neuropathy. Fifty-one patients were involved and the median onset age of sarcoid optic neuropathy was 50 years and 71% were female. In the most affected eye, the median visual acuity at nadir was 20/80 (range, 20/20 to no-light-perception). Sarcoid optic neuropathy often occurs with other neurosarcoidosis-induced clinical and radiological anomalies and diagnostic confirmation sometimes involves biopsy of the optic nerve/sheath. Improvement with treatment is common, although there is some residual visual impairment in most patients. Patients can be spared from irreversible vision loss by better identification and more expeditious diagnosis and care.
