A modified staging of early and intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma based on single tumour >7 cm and multiple tumours beyond up-to-seven criteria
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Dec 21, 2018
Wang YY, et al. - In this large-scale multicentre study, researchers refined the staging of early Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC-A) and intermediate (BCLC-B) based on patients with single hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) >2 cm or multifocal HCCs who had liver resection with curative intent. The training cohort was formed by a total of 986 patients with HCC undergoing liver resection from two institutions and 694 from another institution validation cohort. The findings suggested that BCLC-A and -B modified staging based on single tumour >7 cm and multiple tumours beyond up-to-seven criteria could be more precise to predict the prognosis of HCC patients. Patients with resectable multifocal HCCs could benefit from liver resection beyond the Milan criteria.
