A minimum of 5-year follow-up after lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injections in patients with lumbar radicular pain due to intervertebral disc herniation
The Spine Journal Oct 01, 2017
Kennedy DJ, et al. - This study looked at the long-term outcomes (≥5 years) of lumbar epidural steroid injection in a homogenous group of patients with acute unilateral lumbar radicular pain due to single level herniated nucleus. The injections afforded high success rate at 6 months but during the subsequent 5 years, most of the patients reported recurrence of symptoms at some time, although current symptoms were reported by few and additional injections, surgery or opioid pain medications were needed in a small minority of patients. Overall, transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) or surgery represent effective treatment options for lumbar disc herniation in the short-term but long-term recurrence rates are high regardless of treatment received.
