A methodological assessment of studies that use voxel based morphometry to study neural changes in tinnitus patients

Hearing Research Sep 20, 2017

Scott-Wittenborn N, et al. - This study appraised the regional gray matter volume in people with tinnitus, and analyzed the measures in which methodological variations could account for their heterogeneous results. It focused on yielding guidance on how to conduct prospective studies using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to produce more reproducible results to supplement the comprehension of disease processes such as tinnitus. An urgent requirement was discovered to standardize the use of VBM when evaluating tinnitus patients. Though some heterogeneity was expected due to the rapid advances in the field, more could be done to ensure internal validity between studies.
