A meta-analysis of comparative clinical studies of isolated osteotomy vs osteotomy with lateral soft tissue release in treating hallux valgus

Foot and Ankle Surgery Sep 07, 2018

Yammine K, et al. - Experts evaluated the benefits of the lateral soft tissue release (LSTR) when related to an osteotomy for the treatment of hallux valgus (HV). In all cases of HV deformity, transecting lateral sesamoido-metatarsal ligament (LSML) could be beneficial. They computed 6 comparative studies totalizing 425 patients (549 feet) and comparing two groups: one group of patients having osteotomy alone and the other group having osteotomy with LSTR. Results demonstrated that an added adductor hallucis tendon transection may be effective when the deformity is moderate to severe. They noted a moderate significance of the inter-metatarsal angle (IMA) difference to be in favor of LSTR.
