A Mediterranean diet rich in extra-virgin olive oil is associated with a reduced prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in older individuals at high cardiovascular risk

The Journal of Nutrition Jul 28, 2019

Pintó X, et al. - In this subgroup analysis nested within PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial, researchers investigated how liver steatosis is potentially influenced by three different diets: a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) + extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), MedDiet + nuts, and a control diet. Participants were recruited from the Bellvitge-PREDIMED center and included 100 men and women (mean age: 64 ± 6 years), with high cardiovascular risk (62% with type 2 diabetes). Participants were randomized to one of the three aforementioned diets. Weight loss or to increase physical activity were not advised. In older patients at high cardiovascular risk, a reduced prevalence of hepatic steatosis was reported in relation to an energy-unrestricted MedDiet supplemented with EVOO, a food with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
