A Mediterranean diet rich in extra-virgin olive oil is associated with a reduced prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in older individuals at high cardiovascular risk

Pintó X, Fanlo-Maresma M, Corbella E, et al. - Researchers performed a subgroup analysis nested within the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) trial—a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial—to determine the relationship of 3 different diets and liver steatosis. They randomized 100 men and women (mean age: 64 ± 6 year) at high cardiovascular risk (62% with type 2 diabetes) to either a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), a MedDiet supplemented with mixed nuts, or a control diet (advice to reduce all dietary fat). In older people at high cardiovascular risk, decreased prevalence of hepatic steatosis was reported in relation to an energy-unrestricted MedDiet supplemented with EVOO.
