A lung ultrasound score for early triage of elderly patients with acute dyspnea

Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine May 28, 2019

Markarian T, et al. - Researchers evaluated a modified lung ultrasound (MLUS) score regarding accuracy in prognosticating the severity of acute dyspnea in patients over age 64. In this observational single-center study, participants had an early lung ultrasound performed by a dedicated emergency physician and were allocated by the disposition to either a critical care (CC) group (patients who needed admission to the intensive care unit and/or who died within 48 h) or a standard care group. They analyzed 137 patients (mean age 79 ± 13 years, 74 [54%] women) and categorized 43 (31%) into the CC group. The MLUS was obtained in 30 ± 22 min. For the CC group, MLUS was the only independently associated factor in the multivariate analysis.
