A ‘weekend effect’ in operative emergency general surgery
American Journal of Surgery Nov 19, 2019
Hatchimonji JS, et al. - Researchers examined whether patients undergoing weekend emergency general surgery (EGS) operations display increased rates of complications, death, and failure-to-rescue (FTR). Using National Inpatient Sample data, January 2014–September 2015, they analyzed 438,110 EGS patients; of these, 103,450 underwent weekend operation. Outcomes revealed no association between weekend operation and FTR or complications, however there is evidence for a “weekend effect” on mortality.
