A lower blood pressure threshold to define hypertension: The effect on prevalence, control rate, and constituent ratio of systolic and/or diastolic hypertension
Blood Pressure Monitoring Mar 15, 2019
Lai M, et al. - Among 1,185 adults, hypertension prevalence and the constituent ratio of three hypertension phenotypes (isolated systolic, isolated diastolic, and systolic–diastolic hypertension) were assessed in relation to new US hypertension criteria (systolic blood pressure [SBP]/diastolic blood pressure [DBP] ≥ 130/80 mmHg)]. Over a 7-day period, BP levels of participants were measured for 3 days. BP was measured three times at each visit, with the final value serving as the average. A remarkable increase in the clinical prevalence of hypertension was evident with the use of hypertension criteria of ≥ 130/80 mmHg. This new hypertension criteria also remarkably changed the constituent ratio of the three hypertension phenotypes among newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.
