A longitudinal study of cardiac structure and function using echocardiography in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis

BMC Nephrology Oct 21, 2021

Zhu Y, Zhang D, Hu X, et al. - During long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) management, additional focus on regular echocardiographic examinations is required because there exists a susceptibility for deteriorated right cardiac structure and function during the first 2 years of PD treatment, and higher all-cause death risk was evident post-2 years of PD.

  • This study involved 72 PD patients who had undergone echocardiography.

  • Relative to baseline (18.31 mm), an increase in mean right ventricular diameter (RVD) was evident, which was 18.75 mm and 19.65 mm at year 1 and year 2, respectively.

  • Cardiac output reduced significantly between baseline and year 2.

  • In addition, there was a slight decrease trend in ejection fraction.

  • A 68.2 % higher mortality risk post-dialysis was observed in relation to every 1 % increase in RVD (HR, 1.682).
