A longitudinal study of cardiac structure and function using echocardiography in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis
BMC Nephrology Oct 21, 2021
Zhu Y, Zhang D, Hu X, et al. - During long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) management, additional focus on regular echocardiographic examinations is required because there exists a susceptibility for deteriorated right cardiac structure and function during the first 2 years of PD treatment, and higher all-cause death risk was evident post-2 years of PD.
This study involved 72 PD patients who had undergone echocardiography.
Relative to baseline (18.31 mm), an increase in mean right ventricular diameter (RVD) was evident, which was 18.75 mm and 19.65 mm at year 1 and year 2, respectively.
Cardiac output reduced significantly between baseline and year 2.
In addition, there was a slight decrease trend in ejection fraction.
A 68.2 % higher mortality risk post-dialysis was observed in relation to every 1 % increase in RVD (HR, 1.682).
