A longitudinal examination of the asthma medication ratio in children with Medicaid
Journal of Asthma Aug 24, 2019
Andrews AL, et al. - In search of an efficient and accurate strategy for recognizing children with asthma at high-risk for exacerbation, researchers longitudinally assessed asthma medication ratio (AMR) (#of controller medication claims/(# of controller medication claims + # of rescue medication claims)) in Medicaid-funded children with asthma, given this measure holds potential to serve as a near real-time risk evaluation tool. In this retrospective analysis, Truven Health Medicaid data (2013–2014) were analyzed and 214,452 eligible children, with a mean age of 7.8 years, were identified. Increased odds of severe exacerbation in the subsequent 3 months were observed in correlation with high-risk AMR (vs all other children). Exacerbations were reliably predicted by AMR.
