A longitudinal analysis of CA125 glycoforms in the monitoring and follow up of high grade serous ovarian cancer

Gynecologic Oncology Jan 07, 2020

Salminen L, Nadeem N, Jain S, et al. - In view of their recent work reporting a high specificity of two CA125 glycoforms (CA125-STn and CA125-MGL) to high grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC), researchers investigated their hypothesis, that these cancer-specific glycoforms are feasible candidates as biomarkers in HGSC treatment and follow up. For this work, 122 patients diagnosed with HGSC provided serum samples at the time of diagnosis, during treatment and follow up. The analysis revealed a higher sensitivity of CA125-STn as an indicator of tumor load than conventional CA125. The nadir value of CA125-STn is a predictor of progression-free survival. Detection of relapse was more precisely made with CA125-STn assay than the conventional CA125 assay. These findings suggest the promising value of CA125-STn as a useful biomarker in the monitoring and follow up of patients with HGSC employing a robust and affordable technique.
