A lifestyle intervention of weight loss via a low-carbohydrate diet plus walking to reduce metabolic disturbances caused by androgen deprivation therapy among prostate cancer patients: Carbohydrate and prostate study 1 (CAPS1) randomized controlled trial
Prostate Cancer & Prostatic Diseases Jan 25, 2019
Freedland SJ, et al. - In this randomized multicenter trial, authors assessed the impact of a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) plus walking on the reduction of metabolic disturbances due to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa). They observed a significant loss in weight, and improved insulin resistance, hemoglobin A1c, high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels among LCD/walking candidates at 3 months and 6 months. They found no improvement in insulin sensitivity in LCD/walking patients at 6 months. No alteration was observed in prostate-specific antigen. They noted that LCD/walking preserved total body bone mineral count, and reduced fat mass, lean mass, and percentage body fat at both time intervals.
