A high prevalence of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms in adults with cystic fibrosis is detected using tools already validated in other GI disorders
United European Gastroenterology Journal Mar 30, 2019
Hayee B, et al. – Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) report a variety of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, regardless of pancreatic enzyme insufficiency (PEI), which is reminiscent of other chronic GI disorders. Because there are no systematic reports describing the range or effect of chronic GI symptoms in CF—even though a validated reporting tool would be valuable for academic and clinical purposes—researchers ascertained if tools validated in GI disorders could fulfil this role. In all, they noted a significantly higher prevalence of chronic GI symptoms in adults with CF adults, with symptoms of “lower GI” appearing to predominate. Symptoms were not found to be PERT- or genotype-related, and seemed to be efficiently captured by the GI Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS).
