A decade of improved glycemic control in young children with type 1 diabetes: A population‐based cohort study
Pediatric Diabetes Apr 14, 2021
Sundberg F, Nåtman J, Franzen S, et al. - Since early‐onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with a high risk of early cardiovascular complications and premature death and the strongest modifiable risk factor is HbA1c, whereas other modifiable factors like overweight, also increase the risk of complications, researchers compared treatment outcomes in children younger than 7 years with T1D in Sweden in two separate cohorts: one in 2008 and one in 2018. Information was available on 666 children (45% girls) in 2008 and 779 children (45% girls) in 2018. In 2008 and 2018, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was the same. Usage of CGM and insulin pump increased and HbA1c decreased during this decade. However, HbA1c remained higher than the physiological level, posing a cardiovascular risk, particularly when combined with overweight or obesity. The prevalence of overweight and obesity remained stable.
