A cross-sectional study on factors associated with hypertension and genetic polymorphisms of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in Chinese Hui pilgrims to Hajj
BMC Public Health Sep 11, 2019
Zhang Y, Shi F, Yu Z, et al. - Among Hui Hajj pilgrims in China, researchers assessed the prevalence as well as related lifestyle and genetic risks for hypertension. Via a cross-sectional analysis, they studied the data from 1,465 participants aged 30–70 years who underwent a medical test for Hui Hajj pilgrims from Gansu province, China in 2017. In this population, hypertension prevalence was estimated to be 47%. A higher risk of hypertension was reported in relation to fried food preference and barbecued food preference. Findings revealed a link between TT genotype and hypertension risk, compared with Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) rs4425 AA genotype. For ACE rs4437 CC genotype, Angiotensin II receptor rs129876 AA genotype and Aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) rs1912 TT genotype genotypes, they noted similar results. In Chinese Hui pilgrims, a link was identified between unhealthy lifestyle and genetic factors and the prevalence of hypertension.
