A cross-sectional study of the prevalence and factors associated with tinnitus and/or hyperacusis in children
Ear and Hearing Mar 06, 2020
Nemholt S, et al. - Among 501 Danish children aged 10 to 16 years, researchers determined the prevalence of tinnitus and/or hyperacusis and assessed correlations between tinnitus or hyperacusis and other relevant factors. The research was conducted in eight mainstream schools and data were gathered during an 8-week period from October 27, 2014, to December 16, 2014. Bothersome tinnitus was recorded by 34.6% of the children with any tinnitus, 23.2% of the whole population. Tinnitus and hyperacusis are common in children but their occurrence depends on definitions of tinnitus. Tinnitus severely bothers only a few children. The children can exhibit sound avoidance behavior in the case of hyperacusis.
