A cross-sectional study investigating frequency and features of definitely diagnosed diabetic painful polyneuropathy
Pain Nov 23, 2018
Truini A, et al. - In this cross-sectional multicentre study, researchers investigated the frequency and features of painful diabetic polyneuropathy via consecutively enrolling 816 patients attending hospital diabetic outpatient clinics. Diabetic polyneuropathy was associated with male sex, age, and diabetes severity in 36% of the 816 patients; a pure small-fibre polyneuropathy, unrelated to demographic variables and diabetes severity was observed in 2.5% of the patients. A painful polyneuropathy was observed in 115 (13%) patients, with female sex as the only risk factor for suffering from painful polyneuropathy. Thereby indicating that painful polyneuropathy, a difficult-to-treat complication, is more common in women than in men.
