A cross-sectional and longitudinal study evaluating brain volumes, RNFL, and cognitive functions in MS patients and healthy controls

BMC Neurology May 23, 2018

Frau J, et al. - Researchers performed a cross-sectional and longitudinal assessment of the correlation between retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL), cognitive functions and brain volume. In this analysis, relapsing patients and healthy controls underwent 1.5 T MRI to estimate the normalized volume of brain (NBV), grey (NGV), white (NWV) and peripheral grey (pNGV) matter at baseline. Cognitive functions were assessed by brief international cognitive assessment for multiple sclerosis (BICAMS) and RNFL by Spectral-Domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). They reported that brain volume, cognitive functions, and RNFL were continuous measures of different neurodegenerative aspects. They observed that BICAMS and OCT have low costs and can be used easily in clinical practice to monitor neurodegeneration.
