A cross-national perspective of migration and cancer: Incidence of five major cancer types among resettlers from the former Soviet Union in Germany and ethnic Germans in Russia
BMC Cancer Sep 11, 2019
Jaehn P, Kaucher S, Pikalova LV, et al. - Cancer incidence among ethnic Germans who migrated from the former Soviet Union to Germany (resettlers) vs those living in Russia as well as vs the German and the Russian general populations was determined. Researchers derived data from the cancer registry of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Tomsk cancer registry. The total number of person-years under risk for ethnic Germans was 83,289, for the population of Tomsk was 8,006,775, for resettlers was 219,604, and for the population of Münster was 20,516,782. They identified convergence of the incidence of colorectal, breast and prostate cancer among resettlers to levels of the general population of Münster, after an average stay of 15 years. However, resettler’s vs their population of origin had a comparable incidence of stomach and lung cancer.
