A comprehensive study of risk factors for post-operative pneumonia following resection of meningioma
BMC Cancer Jan 28, 2019
Zuo MR, et al. - Researchers investigated risk factors for post-operative pneumonia (Pop) following meningioma surgery, taking into account both clinical factors and hematological biomarkers. A total of 1,156 patients undergoing meningioma resection from January 2009 to January 2013 were examined with respect to clinical and hematological parameters. Two groups were defined: the Pop group and the Non-Pop group, based on whether the symptoms of pneumonia had manifested. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis were performed. Pop was detected in 4.4% patients (51 of 1156). Compared with the Non-Pop group, the Pop patients were significantly older when the diagnosis was made. Findings revealed strike distinctions of post-operative hospital stays between two groups, with 21 days and 7 days each. Increased risk of the Pop following meningioma resection was observed in association with tumor relapse, skull base lesions, intra-operative blood transfusion and cardiovascular diseases, as revealed in the multivariate analysis. For hematological biochemical markers, the Pop was appreciably predicted by the factor of Red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) and Neutrophils lymphocytes ratio (NLR).
