A comprehensive review of adult onset spinal teratomas: Analysis of factors related to outcomes and recurrences
European Spine Journal Jun 28, 2019
Prasad GL, et al. - Via an online database search conducted for the literature review on a total of 146 cases that were reported and were investigated, the researchers intended to demonstrate the adult-onset spinal teratomas (rare tumors noted in adults and are commonly located in the thoracolumbar region) and management and prognosis of such lesions. Common symptoms like weakness of the limb and backache were observed. Most of the teratomas were intramedullary and were discovered in the thoracolumbar region. Forty-five percent achieved complete resection (CR). Except one, every teratoma was mature. Nine cases reported with relapses, however, in 86 and 26 cases outcomes were good/excellent and fair/poor respectively. A significant association of the presence of pain, absence of limb weakness and CR with good outcomes was observed. In comparison to CR, subtotal resection had significantly greater recurrence rates. Therefore, in terms of outcomes and recurrences, total surgical resection was concluded as the standard treatment and seemed to be beneficial. Also, recurrences were few and could be managed by re-surgery. Moreover, this was the report of the eighth case of adult spinal teratoma with an acute onset presentation.
