A comparison of volatile anesthesia and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on outcome from cardiac surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Nov 01, 2020

Beverstock J, Park T, Alston RP, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with aim to determine 1-year mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with volatile anesthesia vs total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). In addition, they performed comparison concerning in-hospital and 30-day mortality, postoperative levels of creatine kinase and cardiac troponin, and durations of tracheal intubation, intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stays. Findings revealed no difference in mortality and no difference in biomarkers of myocardial injury between patients receiving TIVA and volatile anesthesia for cardiac surgery. In addition, patients receiving TIVA and volatile anesthesia for cardiac surgery did not differ in duration of tracheal intubation. Relative to patients receiving TIVA, those receiving volatile anesthesia had shorter durations of hospital stay and ICU stays after cardiac surgery.
