A comparison of symptoms and quality of life before and after nasal septoplasty and radiofrequency therapy of the inferior turbinate
BMC Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Feb 07, 2018
Nilsen AH, et al. - In this study, the authors aimed to compare symptoms and health-related quality of life (HQOL) before and after surgery in 3 patient groups: Those who underwent septoplasty alone (group-1), septoplasty combined with radiofrequency therapy of inferior turbinates (RFIT)(group-2) and RFIT alone (group-3). They also evaluated whether the change in symptoms and HQOL differed between these 3 groups of patients following the surgery. In all 3 patient groups, surgical treatment of nasal obstruction led to fewer symptoms and better HQOL. When the postoperative scores were compared it was noted that the patient groups reached the same level of HQOL. Less nasal obstruction was seen postoperatively in the patients who underwent septoplasty combined with RIFT as compared to the patients who underwent RFIT alone, which indicated that the combined procedure of septoplasty and RFIT was better than RFIT alone to treat nasal obstruction. Moreover, a poorer outcome following surgery was noted in the revision cases, patients with sleep apnea and asthma patients. For identifying factors influencing the outcome, both disease-specific and general QOL instruments added valuable information.
