A comparison of postoperative respiratory complications associated with the use of desflurane and sevoflurane: A single‐centre cohort study
Anaesthesia Aug 07, 2020
Zucco L, Santer N. Levy, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective study among adult (non‐cardiac surgery) patients who were administered sevoflurane or desflurane for general anaesthesia maintenance, to examine the link between choice of volatile anaesthetic and early postoperative respiratory complications as well as to address a critical knowledge gap in safety results between these two frequently used agents. Early post-extubation desaturation (SpO2 < 90%) or re‐intubation within 7 days postoperatively defined postoperative respiratory complications. Experts found that desflurane use, vs sevoflurane use, was not related to decreased postoperative respiratory complications. This work affords essential data to support organisational decisions concerning desflurane use, in the context of environmental and expense concerns with volatile anaesthetic agents.
