A comparison of ovarian cancer mortality in women with BRCA1 mutations undergoing annual ultrasound screening or preventive oophorectomy
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 11, 2019
Gronwald J, Lubinski J, Huzarski T, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers compared the survival experience of women with a BRCA1 mutation who registered in an ovarian cancer screening program with that of women who opted for preventive oophorectomy. They followed 1,964 women with a BRCA1 mutation and two ovaries intact. No women had cancer of the ovaries or had a bilateral oophorectomy before beginning the research. The cohort who had at least one screening ultrasound and the cohort who had preventive oophorectomy included 1,814 and 659 women, respectively. Data reported that the ten year cumulative death risk was 0.5% and the hazard ratio for oophorectomy vs ultrasound was 0.23. Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer enrolled in an ultrasound screening program are relatively poor in survival and screening is not a viable alternative to preventive oophorectomy.
