A comparison of ovarian cancer mortality in women with BRCA1 mutations undergoing annual ultrasound screening or preventive oophorectomy
Gynecologic Oncology Oct 04, 2019
Gronwald J, Lubinski J, Huzarski T, et al. - In this prospective analysis, researchers compared women with a BRCA1 mutation who enrolled in an ovarian cancer screening program with women who opted for preventive oophorectomy, in terms of their survival experience. Overall 73 incident cancers and 27 deaths attributed to ovarian/fallopian cancer were found among 1,196 women who had one or more ultrasound examinations and no oophorectomy. The 10-year cumulative risk of death was estimated to be 2.0%. They found 12 incident cancers and 2 deaths from ovarian cancer in 659 women who had a preventive oophorectomy. The 10-year cumulative risk of death was estimated to be 0.5%. The hazard ratio for oophorectomy vs ultrasound was estimated to be 0.23. Findings revealed a relatively poor survival of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer enrolled in an ultrasound screening program. Screening did not prove to be a viable alternative to preventive oophorectomy.
